!Bt Telegraph. 1 (Our Own Correspondent.) tPKB S.S. ROTOMAHANA AT THE BLUFF. | Stdnbt, 3rd April. A sensational oase was heard' at the Narrandera Police Court, when J»s. Jepson, tho publio school teacher at C'adell, was ohargod with setting fire to the dwellinghouse of Henry Sweeting, sawmill proprietor ; and Sweeting was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm upon Jepson by shooting at him with a gun. According to tho evidence, Jepson and bis wife had lived unhappily together for sonio time, and in consequence Mrs. Jepson had boen staying at Sweoting'a _ house for several days. On Tuesday night Jepson went to Sweeting's place, and demanded a piece of musio, which ho, claimed. A dispute then followed, but eventually Jepson got tho music and left. On Wednesday, ho went to Narrandera, and returned drnnk. About midnight ho again visited Sweeting's house, went to tho room where his wife was sleeping, broke the window, and Rtruok matches. Mrs. Jepson fled to another room, and when Sweeting came in bo found the window onrtains burning. He pnt out ths flames, and then loaded a double-barrelled gun and went outside. Jopson was standing about •10 yards off, whan Sweeting fired at his logs. He then approached within about 20 yards, when Swoeting again fired, some of the shot striking Jopson's leg. Jopson next made for the fence, where Sweeting was standing, when Swoeting struck him with the clubbed gun, knocking him down and smashing the gun-stock. When ho got up Jepson was again knocked down by some of Sweeting's men, and bound with ropos. Subsequently he was released, and taken home. Sweeting then sent for tho police. Jopson' a defence was that he went to Sweeting's house to have an intorviow with his wife, and that tho ourtaina caught fire by accident. Ho was committed for trial at the Cirouit Court, and Sweeting at the quarter sessions, bail being allowed to tho latter but not the forme*. Jopson's injuries are not serious. Ho had been in the diatriot only a few months. Sweeting is an old romdent.
