ASSESSMENT COURT.
The annual sitting of the Assessment Court for the city was held to-day at the City Council Chamber, Mr. J. C.Martin, RM., pr* siding. Mr. J. Ames, City Vainer, appeared to sustain the valuations, and Mr. T. F. Martin, City Solicitor, represented the Counoil. COOK WABD. <J, H. Baylis, cottage, Express-avenue, JjU9. Mr. Baylis thought last year's valuation, £10, fair. Objection disallowed. The Salvation Army obieoted to the rating of tho Alhambra Hall, Adelaide-road, as the building is used exclusively for roligious purposes. Mr. MtrM? 1 said he did not think the hall was hable to rates, bat as there was a dwelling-house attached the case would be adjourned to enable the reduced assessment to be determined. John Merry, Courtenay- place. .£2B. Valuation sustained. A reduction from 418 to £10 was made in the caso of another cottage. O. W. Clayton, house, College- street, .£25. Objeotor thought the valuation too high, and called Mr. W. Miller in support of his contention. After hearing the evidence the valuation was sustained. Cottage, Vivianstreet, .£4O. Valuation sustained. Godfrey Mantel, allotment, Orientalterrace, .£25. Mr. Wyllie appeared for Mr. Mantel. After hearing the evidence of Mr. Mantel in support of the objection, and Mr. W. Muir in support of the valuation, the valuation was sustained. Reductions by consent were made in the following coses :— John Milner, Carolineavenue, from £32 to .£23 ; Alice Merry, Courtenay-place, from £23 to £18, and £45 to £37. Reductions were also made as follows :— Mary Braoo, Pine-street, £20 to £16; Jeremiah Snllivan, Town Belt, two allotments Teduced from £20 each to £10 each ; Joseph Small, Tory-street, £23, reduced to £25. • Valuations were upheld in a number of oases in which the objectors did not put in an appearance. TE ABO WART). T. Mason, town aore, Adelaide-road, £15. Mr. Mason appeared in support of his objeotion to the value assessed. Mr. W. Muir gave evidence on behalf of the Corporation, and the valuation was sustained. A. T. Bate, 8* acres, Adelaide-rood (re-oreation-ground).
