PETONE FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITION.
The members of the Potono Fire Brigade had a competition in manual fije engine drill lust Saturday afternoon, which was witnessed by a largo number of people. Iho items contested woro — one man, three men, and fivo men ; teams aelected by the Captain, Lieutenant, and Foreman, under conditions and penalties of the Fire Brigadea* Association. Captain Carter and Mr. P. Smith acted as judges, Messrs. R. C. Kirk and H. A. Raven timekeepers, and Mr. J. Wood starter. The first competition was for one man, for trophy proaented by Mr. T. Oxenham. The conditions were : —Run up 20 yarda to engino.'put into working order, run out 50ft delivery hoae. fix branch, fix suotion hoae, give one stroke of levers. L. Parrant, 56sec (including 2aoo penalty), 1 ; J. Shore, lmin lsoo, 2 ; W. Parrant, lmin lOeec (including 2seo penalty), 3. J. Carrington had tho misfortune to slip on the grass, and although making good time had to retire. Competition for three-men teams. Conditions same aa for one man, but men to run back to starting point Trophies presonted by Messrs. Bacon and Kaven and Lieut, lirocklcliumt. — Capt. Austin'H team (L. Parrant, F. I'ottit, uud J. Gough), 50acc, 1 ; Lieut. Brocklohurst's team (J. Shore, J. Armstrong, and J. Carrington), 53 3 sseo, including 2aoc penulty, 2 ; Foreman Home's team (<J. Aehton, W. Parrant, and J. Iboll), t!8 3-ssec, including 12scc penalty, 3. The winning team were very smart, and their work was clean and finished. Competition for five-mon teams. Conditions, run up 25yds to engine, put engine in working order, rnn out two lengths hose, fix branch, and put water ovor rope. For thia item a large tank had been let into the gronnd, and was aupplied with water from an artesian well on Mr. Wilkie's premiaea. This competition was for prizes subscribed for by members of the Brigade. — Lieutenant's team (L. Parrant, C. Ashton, F. Pettit, H. Wilde, and R. Sim), time, 31 2-sth seconds, including two seconds penalty, 1 ; Captain's team (J. Battersby, J. Smith, J. Qough, W. Sillberry, and J. Shore), time, 33 3-s th seconds, including two aeoonda penalty, 2 ; Foreman's team (W. Parrant, J. Armstrong, T. Beveridgo, J. lbell, and J. Carrington. This team did excellent work, but "the water coming too quick for the branchman, threw them out. At the time the water reached the branch they had two seconds to spare. The manner in whioh the men did their work waa frequently applauded, and for a young brigade working under great disadvantage, the whole of the competitions were moat creditable. Fireman L. Parrant's activity and coolness was frequently applauded, and he figures as a winner in each of the three competitions. The Brigade baa decided to adopt a red tunic for uniform made from heavy blanketting, and Lieut. Brocklehurst was selocted as delegate to attend the conference of Associated Fire Brigades.
