A CHALLENGE.

+ TO THE EDITOE. Sie— lf the New Zoalani Times Company wish to insinuate that I was dismissed for anything more than a trivial error, and which, I say, was a mere pretest on their part for my withdrawing the petition against Sir Robert Stout, let them publish their reason, and if it is untrue, I will test the matter in another form. I am prepared to prove that my act in signing the original petition against Sir Robort Stout had the warmest approval of my employers. I am, Ac, K. J. Lindsay. 26th Feb., 1894.

Tho enquiry into the wreck of the ship Jeetaio Roadman wan resumed this afternoon. After hearing evidence, tbe Court reserved its decision. The heavy southerly tfalo now raging has considerably delayed the arrival of several steamors at Wellington from other ports, and up to the time of our going to press they had not been signalled. The list includes the b.s. Mawhera, from West Coast and Nelson ; s.s. Kanieri, from the North ; and the s.s. Te Anau, from Sydney via Auckland and East Coast ports. Several of them have, no doubt, sought shelter at the places en route. The departures of several vessels in port to-day were postponed until the weather moderates. 'ihe Te Anau's departure for Melbourne, via South, has been pat off until 3 to-morrow afternoon. Yesterday the congregation of tHe Wesleyan Trinity Church, Newtown, celebrated tbe twenty-first anniversary of the Sunday school. The Rev. W. H. Beck preached in the morning, tho Rev. Mr. Wrigley in the afternoon to the children, and the Rev S. F. Prior, of Auckland, in the evening, when a large congregation was present. The ohildren, assisted by the choir and an orchestra, under the conductorship of Mr. Caul ton, sang a number of hymns, anthems, and chornses at each service, the solo parts being taken by Misses Swiney, Paukhurst, and A. Fletcher, and Mr. A. Tasker. The collections for the day in aid of the school amounted to £8 9a. There is to be a tea and public meeting to-morrow evening. At the Magistrate's Court this morning the R.M. was engaged taking evidence in the cose of Greenland v. the Mokihinai Coal Company (Limited). Mr. C. W. Greenland, the plaintiff, is 'beoretary to the Westport Harbour Board, and was appointed some 15 months ago by the Westport shareholders of the Mokihinui Coal Company (Limited) their representative to inquire into the accuracy or otherwise of certain oharges brought by Mr. E. J. O'Conor, late M.H.R. for the Bnller, against the then Directors of the Company. A Commission was appointed, and Messrs. T. K. Maodonald, A. H. Miles, and 0. W. Greenland took evidence, but Mr. Greenland left Wellington and returned to Westport immediately after Mr. O'Conor's evidence had beon taken, and without apprising his iolloaguea. The enquiry was continued in his ab3enco, and a report published and issued to shareholders. Mr. Greenland now sues for recovery of fees as one of the Commission. Sworn evidence was given by Mr. T. G. Maoarthy, late Chairman of the Company, Messrs. Miles and Macdonald, Assessors, Mr. Gale, a Director, and Mr. 0. A. Deacon, late Secretary, whion will be transmitted to Westport. The first of the three handicap races arranged by tho Arawa bailing Club, came off on Saturday. The wind at times was very squally, but tho little boats got along splendidly. Unfortunately the Vera. lona, and Mab, were about ten minutes late in starting, which made the race less interesting. '1 he lona, however ,\ picked up considerably, and completed the course in about two minutes less time than any other boat, and after allowing all the others time, she obtained third place. The lona certainly proved herself to be the fastest boat of the lot ; she also appeared to carry her sail better than before. Messrs. Silk and Penty's Rita, wb/ch waa sailed by Mr. J. G. Osborn, finished first, and Mr. C. M. Banks' Spray second. For continuation of reading matter see fourth, page.
