Sir George Dibbs introduced to-day in Committee of Ways and Moans a series of resolutions providing that notes shall be a legal tender in country districts, and shall be payable in gold at the head offices only. During the discussion on the introduction of the Bank Bill, Mr. Reid, Leader of tho Opposition, strongly favoured tbe establishment of a National Bank, also a State paper issue, to take tho place of the notes now issued by tli9 banks. He supported the present proposal of the Government as a makeshift only. Mr. M'Millan also regarded the measure as a temporary one. An amendment in favour of a Stato paper ourrency was negatived by 62 to 33. The motion to introduce the Bill was carried by 46 to 36. Nearly the whole of tho Labour Party opposed the Bill.
