CITY COUNCIL.
The adjonrned meeting of the City Council was held Jast night. There were present — Councillors Harris (in tho chair), Barber, Harcourt. Petheriok, Fraser, Willeston, Ponty, Worth, Tannor, and Tatum. Tho Chairman welcomed the new Conncillors — Councillors Worth, Tanner, and Tatum — and each gentleman suitably replied. • • Lauve of absence for five weeks was granted to tho Mayor, ana for the present meeting to Councillor Vogel. A letter was read irom Mr. H. T. Jameson asking for a reduction in the upset rental of sections 24 ana 25, block 3, To Aro reclaimed land, as ho had reason to believe that he could float a compafty to' establish swimming baths and a gymnasium. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee for a report. , " , The Eight Hours Demonstration Committee asked that the U3O of Newtown Park should be granted for tho Labour sports on Wednesday, 25th prox., and that a publio holiday should be proclaimed. A letter was read from'tlie Harbour Board expressing a hope that the Council would not como to a decision until a conference bad taken place between the Board, the Counoil, the Chamber of Commerce, and other bodies. Tho Council referred the matter to the Publio Works Committee. A letter was read from Mr. A. Sample, urging the Counoil to carry out its intention to extend lien-street, as he wiahed to do some repairs to a property, and could not do so until new levels had been deoided npon. The matter was referred to the Publio Works Committee. The Building By-law Committee reported that they had dealt with the question of footings to the walls of the building to be erected on the ground next the Queen's Hotel, and that they were now waiting auggCßtionß from the Architects' Association and tho Buildera* Association before making their final report. The report was adopted, and Councillors Worth and Tatun: were chosen to succeed Councillors Farsonß and White on the Committee. It was also resolved that the Committee should euperviso the new Sanitary By-laws. Councillor Penty was eleoted a member of the Electric Lighting Committee, rice Mr. White. Councillors Worth, Barber, and Tanner were ohosen to replace the three retiring Councillors of the Fire Brigade Committee ; Councillors Tatum and Tanner to fill two vacancies on the Library Committee ; and Councillors Harcourt and Petherick to replaco Councillors Parsons and Smith on the Finanoe and Sanitation Committee. The report of tho Publio Works Committee was considered. The clanso regarding tho rii»ht-of-way at town acre 114, Ingestrc. street, was referred back to the Committee. It was decided that the use of the Basin Reserve should be granted to the United Friendly Societies on 9th November free of cost provided that tho day before was fine, Thp other clauses were adopted. It was decided to vote .£SO a year for five years to Mr. Ward, C.E., to keep tho map cf tho city up to dale. An express-driver's license was granted to George Sandbrook. The question of erecting lamps in Farish and Aro streets was referred to the Electric Lighting Committee. "Councillor Worth was informed that a report would shortly be brought down with reference to private strcots. It was decided to repair Taranaki-stroet, and the question L of tutting down. another crossing was referred to the Public Works Committee,
