At n meeting of the Chamber of Coramonoo the following resolutions were passed : — " l'bat in the opinion of this Chamber it ib inadvisable so to amend the Government Kail way Actas to make the Bail way Commissioi.ors subservient to tho Ministry of the day, and oven if it is desirable to provide representation of the Ministry on the Board of Commissioners by giving a seat tliereon to the Minister for Railways, jet the amendment of the Aot at present before Parliament is particularly objectionable as to section 5, in so far as it gives power to the Ministry to suspend the Commissioners for other reasons than misbehaviour, a power which should rest solely with Parliament, on sufficient reasons being shown ; and aleo as to seotions 10 and 12, which in regard to important matters of railwaj management undermine the authority of the Commissioners, and substitute the will of the Ministry." O'HKisicnUEOH, 18th August. ■ .At » special mooting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to-day, a motion was passed protesting against the proposal in the Government Btjlways Bill appointing a Minister of the Crown to a seat on the Bailway Board, practically vesting in him the control of the Board, as »uch involves a return to the political management of the railways.
