Mr Gladstono, referring to Mr Chamberlain's opposition to the Irish financial proposals, accused him of habitual gross hyper, bole, exceeding oven what might bo expected from the Devil's advocate. Mr. Chamberlain retorted that references to tho Dr>vil had beeomo common in the House. Personally, ho was not annoyed, because the function of Ul3 Devil's advocate was distinctly useful. Mr. Chamberlain's amendment to tho finnncial proposals— that tho Imperial control of the Irish taxes shall continue until Parliament otherwise determines— was defeated by a majority of CC.
Latest. I UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. 1 (Received July 28, 11 a.m.) London, 27th July. There is increased agitation among the Liberal members of the Honse of Commons against an autumn session of Parliament, and it is bolieved that tho Government will abandon tho idea. At a banquet given by the National Unionist and Conservative Association, Colonel Saundersou declared tbat ho was proparod to maintain in tho Houso of Commons'that Mr. Gladstone was a traitor to British interest*. Sir _ Jiunes Fergusson and Sir John Gorst havo joined tho recently-formed Australian Party in tho House of Commons.
