CITY COUNCIL.
There were present at last night's meeting of the City Council — The Mayor and Connoil' lors Smith, Petherick, Harris, Willeston, Nnderson, Barber, Vogol, White, Penty, and Harcourt. Leave of absence for the present meeting was granted to Councillor Fraser, on the ground of ill-health. An application was received from the Wellington Working Men's Club to be allowed to continue nsing wator for the electric licht in the new clubhouse. The Council decided to allow the club to use the wattr for three weekß longer. Applications from the club for the erection of a lamp near its premises, and for the construction of an approaoh to the building, were referred to the Lighting and Fnblio Works Committee! respectively. It. was decided to grant permission to the Wellington Improvement Sooiety to plant trees in various parts of the city. The Colonial Mutual Assurance Society wrote asking tho Council to make a footpath on the northern side of Harbour-street. The sooiety also complained that the street was not kept in thorongh order, although the rateß now derived from the Society on account of the new warebouses were considerable. Tho Sooiety further agreed to [ ay half the cost of making the footpath on the southern side, although it considered that it Bbould not be called upon to do so. The letter was referred to the City Surveyor for a report. The report of the Public Works Committee was adopted. Councillor Potheriok asked whether the Windsor-place culvert had been finished. The Mayor said he could not answer the question, as the Inspector of Nuisances was absent on leave. Councillor Petherick said be wished to know, as people were anxious to drain into tho culvert. A letter from Mr. J Thompson asking for permission to form a right-of-way off Nairnstreet was referred to the Publio Works Committee. Mr. R. O'Connor, agent for the late Hon. John Martin's estate, wrote asking that the executors should bo released from the bond with ref erenco to A!ie formation of Marion aud Espie streets, between Ghuznee and Ingestre streets. The Connoil decided not to release the executors until the expiration of the period originally stated, vi» , twelve months. In oommitfoo it was decided that sanction be given to the right-of-way off Abel Smithstreet applied for by Mcsur.- Mat-on andßiohmond; that the Council do not make any alterations in the terms ot the agreement between the Corporation and Mr. A Boardman in reference to tho exchange of land at Karori-street and Grant-road ; that the seal of the Corporation bo affixed to the lease of sections S, 6, and 8, block 2, Reclaimed Land, to Messrs. Briscoe, MacNeil & Co. ; that consent be given to the deed of arrangement re lease No. 782, Pahiatua, from Boyden to the Permanent Investment Association, Wairarapa; that the amount fixed by the City Valuer for the unused portion of the roadway at the east end of Constable-street, be approved. On resuming, theso recommendations were agreed to.
