UNION STEAM SHIP COMPANY.

IMPROVEMENTS IN THE SERVICES. IBt Telegraph.] (Our Own Correspondent. J Auckland, This Dat. A special message from Melbourne sayi that Mr. Mills, managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company, is arranging for a further improvement of the company's Bervices. The Union Company intends to generally improve both the San Franoisco and intercolonial lines, with the usual weekly departure from Melbourne and Hobart. Although the directors will abandon the low lares hitherto charged, they propose to drop the rates to as moderate a standard as will encourago travel and at the same time prove remunerative, which the late fares were not. Extremely fast services do not pay, but a spaed up to all fair requirements will be maintained. Similarly the very low fares of the past season, while attracting ft large traffic, did not nearly pay the com, pany, and would give no true indication of the traffic under strictly business rates. The establishment of the new Vancouver service is too far ahead to consider its effact on the San Francisco service, but the Union Company's service will nevertheless be improved by the return of the Monowai to intercolonial service, with a gain to the latter, and the institution of larger and faster vessels on the American route. The Union Company has some fifty-two steamers afloat, and the fleet is to be supplemented by another large vessel — the M'iori, 4000 tons — which the company has acquired for its special service between New Zualaud and Calcutta. This line has been worked with some of the spare intercolonial traders. The steamer now obtained was formerly running between London and New Zealand under tho Shaw, Savill & Albion Company's flag. She will be placed permanently on the Calcutta trade. ____^____^_^_ Owing to a telegram relating to Mr. Moxton's now flour mill in the Wairarapa having been published as from our own correspondent at Carterton, it might be supposed that the mill was near that township, instead of at Grey town as it really is. An influential committee of Catholics has been formed to take steps for the presenter tion of a purse of sovereigns to the Very Rev. Dr. Walters, Reet6r of St. Patrick's College, before his departure for Europe. The bazaar at the Academy of Arts was well attended throughout yesterday and in the evening the gallery was crowded, the chief attraction being a performance by members of St. Andrew's choir of " The Ladies' Parliament." To-day is to be tho last of the bazaar, which closes this evening, when amongst other attractions will be a button-sewing competition for gentlemen nominated by ladies, and another for ladies nominated by gentlemen. Up to last evening the takings amounted to over .£IOO. For to-day's sales the goods have been gone over and reduced. The promoters of the Thursday Popular Concerts announce in this issue their third concert, to take place on the 27th inst. The price to all parts of the house will in future be one shilling, as the pit accommodation is required for emergencies, when the stalls and cirole are not equal to the demand, as was the case last Thursday. R. Hiuiunli & Co. advertise tint, jieldiiig to pressure from outside districts, tlieV will co - tinue their half-price boot sale for 1 1 Jays longer, and an additional shipment of genuine waterproof porpoise and grained X boots, just arrived, will be offered. The most attractive line about town this week is 150 lovely French pattern bonnets that have been pnrchased in London for Mr. C. Smith, the cash draper, Cuba-street, at 50 per cent. t>S the nsual West End prices. This large discount enables Mr. C. Smith to sell these beautiful French bonnets in Wellington at 14s 6d, 16s 6d, 18s 6d, 20s, 255, which is muoh less than [half their value. — Advt.
