THE OUTWARD MAIL STEAMER. COMPLAINTS BY PASSENGERS. [By Telegraph.]
(united pbebs association. l Auckland, This Dat. Fifty Bteerage passengers by the mail steamer Monowai from Sydney lodged a complaint with the Collector of Customs to-day regarding the state of the steerage accommodation on bo^rd the vessel. They alleged th^t the quarters were greatly overcrowded, steerage passengers being compelled to go in tbe 'tween decks, and being crowded out by saloon passengers ; alfiothdt tbe ventilation, &c, was very imperfect. The agents and officers deny the overcrowding, and say that tho quarters are satisfactory and well ventilated, and were not excessively crowded. Later. Tho Collector of Customs and Health Officers inspected the Monowai, and being satisfied with the condition of the steerage allowed the vessel to proceed.
