Samuel Finlay , tho old man who attempted suicide by outting his throat on Thursday night, is oxpeoted to reoover. Ho was givon to drink, and was living alone in a wretched, filthy hovel, at Spreydon. with no furniture, and only a pallet and quilt mado of sacking. Tho neighbour", most of whom aro poor, often give him a meal. Ho was top feeble to work. Ho has children in various part« of the country, but thov aro poor. He appliod to tho Charitable Aid Board, but the facts placed before tho connnittc dill not reveal any iippenvauco of xirgpiit necessity, because tho old man, it was stated had como from Ashbnrton with .£2 or and though ho had stated that ho was ponmloss, his statement was doubted. It was known to tho Committee that ho hiul a daughter in town whom ho conld appeal to to relievo any actual starvation, and that ho had lived or associated with a woman who wua herself the recipient of charitablo aid and that his family had refused to support him because of his association with this woman. It was decided to write to his son at Ashburton, asking him to contribute lo the old man's support. Tho letter was accordingly written, and no further action was to be takon until tho Board received a reply, whioh has not been received.
