Samuel Finlay , tho old man who attempted suicide by outting his throat on Thursday night, is oxpeoted to reoover. Ho was givon to drink, and was living alone in a wretched, filthy hovel, at Spreydon. with no furniture, and only a pallet and quilt mado of sacking. It was known to tho Committee that ho hiul a daughter in town whom ho conld appeal to to relievo any actual starvation, and that ho had lived or associated with a woman who wua herself the recipient of charitablo aid and that his family had refused to support him because of his association with this woman. It was decided to write to his son at Ashburton, asking him to contribute lo the old man's support. Tho letter was accordingly written, and no further action was to be takon until tho Board received a reply, whioh has not been received.
