The West Australian miners are very indignant at the action of the Government in exempting mines from forfeiture during a strike, on the ground that tho Government is thereby supporting tho mining companies in the struggle against the miners. The men with means intend leaving Southern Cross for other colonies. The iron trade in Melbourne has issued a circular to the members of the Legislative Assembly asking assistance in obtaining increased duties on engines, agricultural implements, and other articles, up to 50 per cent, on boiler blowers and other articles now coming in f roe, and 45 per cent, on eastiron telegraph poles, equal to £A per ton. The Labour Convention sitting in Brisbane recommends that in order to keep the Labour Party absolutely free from the scandals which frequently occur through intemperance, they should refuse to endorse as a Labour candidate any man known to bo of intemperate habits.
