FOOTBALL.
RUGBY. The team selected to represent Wellington against Canterbury went in for a practice at the Poneke gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Wynward, of Petono, who will be unablp to play against Canterbury on occonnt of an injury, will be replaced by Baumber, the exWairarapa representative The Post and Telegraph Department will be represented as follows in the match against the Government Insurance Department to-morrow : — Tucker, Ross, Smith, Williamß, Symons, Thompson, Johnston, Scutt, Palmer, Wyatt, Noon, Backhouse, Tregonning, Fordham, and Richards. The Poneke and Pioneers met on Saturday, and decided a heat of tho Third Class Championship, the Ponekes winning by two points to love. Seagar scored. In the annual match between tho public schools of Wellington and Wairarapa, which, as stated in Our issue of Saturday, was won by the city representatives by six points to love, Carter (Petone) kicked a goal from a mark obtained by Thomson (Mount Cook). Garter also touched down, but "Wills (To Aro) was unable to convert. Tho visitors were hospitably treated. The match at Island Bay on Saturday between the New Zealand Times team and the representatives of Scoullarand Chisbolm resulted in the defeat of tho latter by 20 points to love. Marter scored three tries, Grigg two, and Francs and Saltor each touched down once. Campbell and Grigg converted two of tho tries. The play in the junior representative match at Newtown on Saturday was fairly interesting. The probable fifteen beat their opponents by 12 points to love: M'Govern, Thomson, and Roe' touched down, and two of the tries wero converted. The Rugby won by default on Saturday against Sydenham, and although two other matches have to be played for the Cochrano trophy, Merivale v. Star and Merivale v. Karori, the result cannot alter the Rugby Club's position for the cup, which they win with tne following fine record :— Matches played, 10 ; won, 9 ; joints for, 103 ; against, 9 ; points for cup, 18. Epuni won on Saturday from Wellington third by default, the latter team failing to put in an appearance. ASSOCIATION. The team from Wellington visited Feilding on Friday afternoon and got beaten by four goals to love. The Feilding men were much heavier and stronger than was anticipated. In the first spell there was no score. Andrews, playing full bock, had his anklo injured, but played splendidly, his defence being frequently applauded. In the second spell the local men nod sill the best of the play, and put the ball through four times. Hare, Daniels, and " Joe " were the best cf the winning team, M'Kinnon, Gardiner, Richardson, and Andrews being the most conspicuous on the other side. After the match the visitors were entertained by the local players and the team left for Wanganni by tho 6 o'clock train. Next morning the Wellingtonians played against the Collego team, the match starting at 10.30. Wellington was defeated by six goals to one, bnt in ppite of the difference between tho scores the game was fast and well contested. Although entering from on injured ankle, Andrews took his place at full bock, and played pluokily throughout the game. Richardson played splendidly forward, and M'Kinnon (who scored the only goal), Gardiner (half-back), and Howe (.in goal), were also good. The best in the College team were W. B. Andrews, Grace, and Atkinson (2). After being entertained at lunch, the visitors left by the afternoon train for home. All speak very highly of tho treatment received at both places. Tho College team will play a match against Mr. Gardiner's School, at Hobaon-street, on Thursday morning next. The match Wellington Club (Rugby) v. Association team was played on the Park on Satnrday, the bitter winning rather cosily by four goals to two. In the first spell Morrah scored for tho colours and Phillpote for the whites, and in the second Ferguss^n, Jacks, and Hailwood put on a goal apiece for the whites, and Hill one for the colours. The play wot not good owing to the sloppy state of tho ground. The best of the winners were Ireland, Auld, Jacks, and Forbes (backs), and Phillpotts, Hailwood, and Fergusson (forwards), and for the losers Johnston, Harley (2), Murray, Morrab, and Hill. The
toam is remindod of the mooting to bo hold at tho Wavorloy Hotel to-night at 8 o'clock. The toam which is to represent Wellington in tho tournament at Christchurch will loave for tho South by tho Takapuna on Wednesday, and will put up at tho Clarendon Hotol during thoir stay in tho Cathedral City. IBy Telegraph.) ICNITBD PRESS ASSOCIATION. I Auckland. 20th August. Tho Auckland Eugby Union matches wore continued to-day. In the match between first fiftoens of tho Parnell v. Graf ton clubs, tho former won by 21 to 9. In Suburban v. City, tho latter won by 8 points to nit. Blenheim, 20th August. Tho intorprovincial match between Marlborough and Nolson took placo hero this aftornoon, and after a very fast and exciting game rosulted in a win for the former by two trios to nil. There was a largo concourso of apootfttors.
