EUAHINE. The N.Z.S. (Jo.'s ss Rimbmo, from London via Capetown, Hobart and Auckland, arrived in liarharbour early last eveniug, A lengthy description of this vessel, the largest that has ever visited this port, has already been published in our columns, but a few particulars may be of intorest. Tho Rnahine is a steel screw boat, straight stemmed, and brig rigged, which givos her arnplo snilintr power, should circumstances requiro it. Her dimensions are. length between perpendiculars 428 ft, beam 50ft depth of hold 35ft 6in, and gross measurement 6127 tons. Her hull is of considerable strength, and, being built m compliance with Admiralty requirements, she can bo utilised as a troop ship. Her engines are of the quadruple expansion type, of SOO h.p. nominal, or 5000 effective, and on the trial trip a speed of 15*6 knots was attained, under great disadvantages. There nrn three double-ended boilers, each fitted with 6 furnaces, and tho working pressure is 1801bs. She is fitted with Haslem's patent refrigerating machinery, tho forward engine being the largest of its kind afloat, and its strength is considerable, being able to throw 170,000 cubio feet of cold air per hour. Tho storage capacity is about 70,000 carcases. The Riukino has the latest-, appliances for moving cargo, Brown's patent steam and hydraulic cranes being fitted in each of the three holds. Her first and second saloons have all the latest conveniences, including electric light, and steam warming pipes. Tho first saloon will accommodate 80 passengem, the second saloon 45, and tho steerage 270. The citadel deck affords a Splendid promenado, there being an unbroken space of 180 ft by 15ft on each side. Altogether as a specimen of modorn marine architecture sho is well worth inspecting. Tbe Ruahine is commanded by C»pt John Bone, R.N.R., late of the ss Tongariro, and associated with him are the following officers : — First, Mr R. Forbes ; second, Mr R. Ponton ; 3rd, Mr W. R. Donald j fourth, Mr C. L. Kinnear ; first engineer. Mr Waring j second, Mr Walker ; surgeon, Dr Qane ; pnrser, Mr Vernon Harvey j chief steward Mr W. J. Franklyn. The Rnahine takes her departure for Lyttelton on Thursday next
