4 TO THE EDITOR. Sir — In answer to an " Intoroated One " in last night's Post I would, with your permission, refer him to an advertisement which appeared in your paper on Monday last. I am, &c, 19th August. Phono.

In Chambers this morning, tho public examination of _T. H. Bond, bankrupt, asked for by tho creditors in the estate, was fixed for the sth September, on the application of the Official Assignee. Bofore the presentation of the prizes to the Wellington Guards last night, Captain Patorson made a few remarks with reference to the Tolunteer forco of tho colony generally, and in doing so replied very thoroughly to reasons advanced by those who state that " volunteering in the colony is a farce." Subsequently, and in response to the vote of thanks to Miss Seddon, the Hon. Mr. Seddon, Dofenoo Minister, stated that the voluntoers, as a volunteer force, -would always have his support as boing necessary for the dofenco of tne colony, and moro suitable than a paid, or partially paid, force. He added that the recommendations of <3olonel Fox would, when made, recoivo •every consideration from the present Government. A roward of .£3 js offered by tho Gas Consumers' Association for tho discovery of persons stealing the gas burners from tho Drillshed. This week's Canterbury Times contains information on a wide variety of subjects, carofully written and conveniently classified. The Agricultural Notes and roports ore good, and the London correspondent gives interesting particulars respecting the New Zealand athletes at Home. The construction of a road to connect the Wellington Fruitgrowers' Association blook with the railway station at Waikanae has beon commenced. -Fifteen men are employed, and it is expected that tho work will be completed before Christmas. Operations on the various sections are progressing satisfactorily, and the prospoots of the settlement are considered to bo excellent. Tho National Review for July contains an article writton from Wellington by Mr. Norwood Young, giving a very clear and accurate account of the nature and effect of the new taxation, and the policy of the present Government. The analysis given, and tho remarks made as to the tendency of that polioy, although true, will not raiso New Zealand in tho estimation of thinking men at Home. M. Musin and Herr Soharf are making Mr. A. F. Hill's Scotch Sonata a leading feature of their concert programmes in Australia, and the throe principal Melbourne papers— Argus, Age, and Herald— highly praise the sonata as a composition, apropos of its performance in that oity.
