His Excellency at St. Patrick's College.

? His Excellency the' Governor and tho Countess of Glasgow, accompanied by Ladies Augusta, Alice, and Dorothy Boyle, Miss Hallowes, and Mr. Clayton, A.D.C., paid their first visit to St. Patrick's College this afternoon. On their arrival, an address of welcome was presented to Lord Glasgow by Masters Franois Grace, James Butler, and Frederick Crombie, of which the text is as follows :—: — May it please Your Excollency — We, the masters and students of St. Patrick's College, desire to bid you respectful and cordial welcome. The visit of a distinguished stranger la always to us a source of pleasure and legitimate pride, showing, as it does, tho interost taken in the work in which we are engaged. This pleasure and pride aro much enhanced when in this hall — the scene of our daily labours — we greet tho Governor of the Colony, who, coming fresh from Home, as tho representative of Her Most Gracious Majesty in these seas, compels the respect and homage of all subjects of tho Crown. In a young country liko Now Zealand, however enterprising and progressive, Your Excellency will not yet look to her children for that mature fund of scientific, literary, or classic scholarship which is the rightful pntcome of ages of study, and the peculiar birthright of those timehonoured institutions at Homo, well known to yonr Exellency, that have written their fame down deep in the hearts and minds of thinking mon. Our aim, however, and onr ambition, is to follow, feebly it may be. in tho path so clearly marked out for us by tho great seats of learning in the Old Country, and, like them, on the solid bedrook of faith and reliction, to .contribute our share in raising, lorming, and moulding in this colony a race of men who in virtuo and knowledge, in wisdom and culture, in trne patriotismfrnd practical Christianity, will not beunworthyof our ancestors. We begto thank Your Excellency for coming amongst us. Wo desire also unaffectedly to thank Lady Glasgow and tho members of Your Excellency's family for tho honour done our College by their visit. We hope during Your Excellency's years of high office it will, at times, bo our privilege to oxtend hearty welcome within those walls to Your Excellency, to Lady Glasgow, and to the members of your distinguished family. Signed on behalf of the College faculty by — Folix Joseph Watters, S.M., D.D., Rector; A. Braxmeier, S.M., M.S., Vice-Rector. On behalf of tho students by John J. Casey, John N. O'Connor, Joseph Sheridan, William Organ, Bernard M'Carthy, Melville J. Crombio, Francis J. Grace.
