The Primuto has received the following tolpgram from Newfoundland, aud has acceded to tho request nuido : — "Diocese overwhelmed with disaster. Appalling fire at St. John's, destroying cathedral, bishop's and clergy houses, Kmulay nnd day schools. Synod hall, and orphanage ; cathedral cost half million dollars, practically uninsured ; churchmen heavy sufferers, unable to do much. Beg appointment immediately of special Sunday for collection in every church in your province. Appealing for similar aid to all Metropolitans. — Bishop Newfoundland, St. John's." The nightwatchman on duty on the Queen's Wharf heard n. mysterious splash near thn bow of the s.s. Tainui on Monday night, and reported the matter to tho harbour authori ios It was thought that some contraband goods might havo been thrown overboard, so tho mutter was reported to tho Customs authorities. A diver was .sent down yesterday, and asjuin to-day, but the result of Ilia examination of tho bottom was tho recovery of uotliiiiK more vnlimblo than one of tho American mu->ie;»l initrumontis of the musical box typo known us the org.inei.to. An accident occurred on the Queen's "Wharf, shortly at cor 3 o'clock this afternoon, to a racti named Samuel Ro'oincon. A truck, ou which c. l.irge piano was resting, suddenly tilted up, and came with considerable iorco on Robinson's leg. His injuries weru not asccrtainablo, bnt it is believed tlmt the small bone of tho lej is broken. Ho was attended to by Dr. Tripe. This is the second herious accident that Robinson has mot with in the course of a few weeks. His Honour the Chief Justice held a sitting of tho Supreme Court in Banco thia morning, for the purpose of determining several appeals. Tho first case dealt with was an appeal by Emma Hill, of Palmerston North, against a conviction under the Licensing Act and the imposition of a fine of .£lO and £1 Is costs, with the forfeiture of liquor seized by tho police, or in default one month's imprisonment, for selling liquor without a license. Mr. Jellicoo appeared in support of the appeal, and contended that the existence of the offence was not proved. His Honour reserved his decision. Beard v. Official Assignee was an appeal agaiufcfc a docision of the District Judge in the Bankruptcy Court at Masterton, declaring void a certain settlement made by the appellant against himself prior to bankruptcy. His Honour, afior hearing argumont, reversed tho decision of the District Judge, and allowed tho appellant costs, to come out of such assets as aro available in the estate. Mr. Bell appeared for tho appellant, and Mr. Brown for the respondent. Stewart & Co. appealed against a decision of Judgo Mackay in refusing, as Trust Commissioner, to grant his certificate in respect of a deed of assignment. The appellants, it appears, acquired a right to all timber growing upon tho Moiki Block, which had boon assigned by tho native owners to William Mitchell. Subsequent to tho oxecution of the deed of assignment a part of the block was purchased by one Piripi te Mon.ri, the respondent in the present case, who opposed the issue of a certificate upon the ground that a certified statement in Maori of tho contents of the deed was not endorsed upon it. Judgo Mackay refused the certificate on that ground, and tho appellants now appeal on Iho following grounds : — (1) That it was not competent for a Commissineoi' to decide tho question as to tho proper execution of tho deed ; and (2) that tho deed was executed with tho formalities required by law. Mr. Hutchen appeared in support of tho appeal, and Mr. Bell for tho respondent. Argument had not been concluded at tho time of going to press. A " bolt " occurred opposite the Evening Post corner shortly before three o'clock this afternoon. Dr. Mackenzie reported that the Scatoun-road was in urgent need of repair, bnt it was decided not to do anything until tho summer weather sots in. This was all tho business. Tho fortnightly meeting of tho Excelsior Lodge of Druids was hold last evening. Bro. J. Janscn, A.D., being in the chair. The champion yacht rnces will be sailed at Lyttelton on New Year's Day, and promise to be oven more interesting than those which wero decided in Wollington on 22nd January last. The Mapu, Isca, and Mahina will probably represent "Wellington in tho second-class race, and two yachts are about to bo built" in Auckland for the contest. One is for Mr. T. Kilfoylo. late owner of tho Tangaroa, the order having been placed with Mr. R. Logan, of the North Shore, and the othor is for Mr. O. B. Waymouth, who formerly owned tho Mapn, the present champion. Both yachts will be a little larger than the Mapu. "We also learn that a syndicate has been formed in Lyttelton to build a second-class boat at that port after tho model of tho famous American clipper Gloriana. The Port Nicholson Yacht Club intend to offer another good prize for the_ second-class race in January, with tho object of inducing the Auckland and Lyttolton boats to compote hero after tho champion races have been decided at tho latter port. Lovers of theatricals will learn with interest that Miss Fanny Wiseman (Mrs. South), who has been a prominent member of many dramatic companies that have toured the colony, lately rotnrned from Australia and purposes settling in Wellington. Nothing succeeds like success. It is simply wondorfal the success that attends tho drt»pery sales of Mr. C. Smith, the cash draper, Cnba-streot. During tho past week, the shop has been thronged with buyers, all apparently thoroughly satisfied with tho bargains they havo secured. The baskets and remnant tnblo are replenished daily, and mantles, millinory, an-1 dress material's, aro almost being given away. — Advt. For continuation oj reading matter seejourth paa:.
