A meeting of tho Petono Licensing Committeo was held to-day, Mr. E. H. Collett in tlio chair, when the following renewals were granted : — James Don, Kmpire Hotel ; Thomas Oxenbam, Victoria Hotel ; Richard Mothes, Marine Retreat Hotel ; Thomas James Porter. That the late Building By-law Committee bo reconstituted, in order to consider home suggested amendments from tho Wellington Builders' Association, and any otlier matters in connection with the said by-law, and that the namo of Councillor White be substituted for that of Councillor Willcston on the said committeo. That the offer of Mr. H. T. Windust re sorting tho refuse at tho Destructor be declined. That a bylaw bo prepared to appoint regular stopping 1 places for tramcars, omnibuses, nnd brakes. That the suggestion of Dr. Chappie re prevention of typhoid fever be referred to the Sanitary Committee for consideration. The lecture on " Mark Twain," delivered in tho Courtenav-placo Congregational Schoolroom on tho occasion of tho inauguration of tho Mutual Improvement Society, by Mr. J. R. Kennor. was much ".pprociatod. Tho lecturer prefaced his loctnro with a brief dissertation on wit and humour, and then sketched " Mark Twain's" carcor, illustrating it with recitals from " Life on the Mississippi," " Innocents at Homo," " Innocents Abroad," and tho " New Pilgrims Progress," concluding with a funny and seasonable sketch, entitled, "Curing a Cold." " Mark Twain's " funny things appealed to tho risibilitios of those present, and on the motion of tho Roy. Mr. Powoll, seconded by Mr. F. Moadowcrof t, a voto of thanks was accorded tbo lecturer. Tho noxt meeting of tho Society will bo hold on Monday, 20th Juno. Mr. Fabips Feraud, manager of tho Ovido Musin Concert Company, now in tho North, is at present in Wellington for tho purpose of arranging for the visit of his company to this part ot tho colony.
