THE COLOURED LABOUR PROBLEM.

I UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. I Sydney, 7th Juno. Tho Government has agreed to tho suggestion to hold a Coloured Labonr Conference. Latest. SIR ARTHUR GORDON SPEAKS OUT. [united press association.] (Receivod June 8, 11 a.m.) London, 7th Jnne. Sir Arthur Gordon, in a lotter to The Times, insists that disaster will resnlt from draining the Paoifio Islands of their adult men. It will be a reproach to England if Bhe permits a policy that will sweep out the population from the whole expanse of the Pacific. If New Guinea is opened to labour traffic it will be necessary to constitute a Government there independent of Queensland. It is impossible to dissociate the labour traffic in the past from certain abuses, but on the other hand Sir Arthur considers it a gross exaggeration to term the system one of slavery. Yet the danger and probability of abuses arising again are enormons, for despite every effort illegal things were done in reorniting labour for Fiji. He donbts it public opinion in Queensland will sanotion the stringent enforcement of the regulations, and advises the importation of Indian coolies.
