TWO DUKES TRIED FOR MURDER.

The sensational trial of two Dukes of Vilaroaa has at last been concluded. The charge dates from November, 1887, and the allegation was that the brothers Bartolo assassinated a young lieutenant of the artillery named Leoue, a suitor for their sister's hand. The young lady returned his affection, and, notwithstanding the brothers' opposition, declared that she would marry no other man. Hence the unfortunate officer was enticed into the Vilarosa palace by means of a trick, and there treacherously murdered. The trial waa to have taken place at Palermo, but there the Dukes of Vilarosa possess great influence, and had bribed many of the witnesses, and even, it is eaid, tjj.e jurors. The scene of the trial was therefore changed, to Naples, where every € guarantee was offered by the authorities that justice would be done. The result of the trial has excited munli indignation in Italy, for one brother, Francesco, has been acquitted, and tho other sentenced to five years' imprisonment. Opinions are freely expressed that the Naples jury" aleo had been suborned, and the proceedings after the trial have assisted in embittering public feeling, for a number of men and women in the pay of tho Viluroaas, and by no means of good character, accompanied the acquitted brother out of Court, and organised a number of ovations in l'is favour. The vordict is characterised as a failure of justice and was greeted by .1 crowd of 5000 poisons with absolute howls of discontent. _____________
