LOCAL INDUSTRY. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir— l notico that the City Council refused their consont to Mr. Peor ereoting soap works at Berhamporo. Who Mr. Poor may be I know not, but I hopo tho consont was not withhold simply on the mere abstract question that soap works have a nauseons Bmoll, and therefore ought to be disoouragod. Tho pormanontprosperity of towns mainly deponds upon their local industries, and every faoility ought to be givon to thoso who wish to ombark their capital in the manufacture of suoh. Provided proper preoauhons aro taken, soap manufacture should not becomo a nuisance to the neighbours, and ,« they do not object, nobody else should. Every looal industry that is started in this town, of whatever sort it may be, tends to tho advantage of all of us, and I hope the day will come when all the colonial manufactures that the colony requires will ultimately be centralized in this city. I am, &c, C. W. Tanneb.
