THE VOLUNTEERS.
The teams which have beon chosen to ropresent the City Rifles in the coming military tournament held a special drill at Mount Cook last evening, and some oxcellent work was done. There was a very large number of onlookers, which is desirable, as it will tend to give tho new hands confidence in their performances. From the largo number of men present it is very evident that the approaohing tournament has infused into the company a good deal of genuine interest, and the preparations for the competitions are being carried out with energy and determination. The teams meet together for praotice on Monday evening, and after parade a " night alarm will take place, and the " tent squads" will be engaged in a competition of pitching and striking camp. The r ' working bee " to put the targets in position at Evans Bay on Saturday afternoon will find tools, Ac, supplied on the range, and it is to be hoped that there will be a largo attendance of volunteers, especially shooting men, for whose advantage the work is now being done. Several men who are unable to go have promised to pay substitutes. A general meeting of the Horetaunga Mounted Infantry was hold at the Lower Hutt last evening for the purpose of making final arrangements for the annual oamp training. It will be held, as usual, on the Hutt Bacocourse, which has beon kindly plocod at tho disposal of the corps, and tho men will remain in camp for a week, commencing on Saturday, 24th inst. Tho town contingent will assemble on that day at the rear of the Opera House, and the country men at tie Lower Hutt, and afterwards proceed from the places named to the camp, which will be in charge of Capt. Loveday. On Sunday, the 25th, there will oe a ohuroh parade at tho Lower Hutt, the Garrison Band going out from town and supplying the music The camp mess room on this occasion will be in the large shod on the course belonging to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, who have allowed the corps to have the use of it for the purpose named. The following members havo been selected to represent the D Battery in the match with the Permanent Artillery on Saturday next :— Sergt. - Major Robinson, Sergts. Kucben, Carter, Potneriok, and Jeffreys, Bombardier Howe, Gunners Wilson, M'Kenzie, Hyland, and Coombs; emergency, Gunner Perrin. Conditions, 200, 300, and 400 yards ; seven shots at each; class-firing targets and positions ; to commence at 2 o'clock shftrp. Tlio team aro requested to meet at tho Drillshod on Friday" night at 8 o'clock, when ammunition will bo issued.
