LIGHTERAGE OF DANGEROUS GOODS.
4 TO THE EDITOR. Sir— Having read in your last night's issue the case which came before the R.M. Court that powder was carried by unlicensed lightermen, I hope, for the protection of life and floating property, that tho authorities will m ,ko an example of the offenders. I am informed that this has beon done for some considerable time, and that powdo. and other dangerous goods have been lying in open boats all night in close proximity to the wharf and shipping. Tho Tokapo, which sailed for Sydney direct this afternoon, took 1700 tons of general cargo and about 150 passengers. Mr. Justice Richmond left for Nelson by the Rotorua to-day in order to preside at the half-yearly sittings of the. Supreme Court in that town. The midwinter holidays in tho Wellington educational district commence on Monday next and terminate a fortnight afterwards. The Pirinoa School Committee havo approved of the action of tho Education Board in selecting Mr. John Hopkirk for the position of teacher in tueir district, and he will enter upon his duties after the midwinter holidays. Members of the Nationalist Club are reminded that a meeting takes plare this evening. Pmncia Sidey & Co. will sell to-morrow, tlio whole of the furniture, furnishings, &c, of the Tinmru Restaurant, Willis-street. Noble Campbell & Co. will sell to-morrow, fruit, plants, <fee. littery & Co. will sell to.morrow, fruit, &c. A. J. Reid will sell to-morrow, sundries. As the season advances, manufacturers of drapery always have a few odd lines left over, and rather than take it into stock, they are prepared to job, or, in other words, lose money on them provided they can turn it into ready money. As I always buy for cash, and nevor lose an opportunity of buying a bargain, during tho past month I have opened np, ex Tongariro, 50 cases of job Dress materials, S'lirtings, Tickings, Cretonnes, Cretonne Fringes, Gloves, Ladies' Mantles, and 560 pairs of Youths strong Tweed Trousers at 3s lid por pair, and a lot of other lines too numerous to mention, at C.
