PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held at the Council office, Jackson-street, la->t evening. Present — His Worship the Mayor (Mr. R. C. Kirk), and Councillors J. Smith, P. Smith, Henry, Crofts. Jackson, Burridge. Burnley, and Fraser. The Town Clerk was granted permission to =ell the drainage pipes belonging to the Council at current rates. The application of Mr. Silva, that a cart entrance to his section in Nelson -street be granted, which was referred by the Public Works Committee to the councillors for the ward, wan reported on, and it was decided that the request bo acceded to. It was resolved that the application of Airs. Webly re formation of footpath in Jackson-street be granted, on condition that the costs of curbing and forming be paid by her, and that the work be carried the full length of the Jackson-street frontage. The ponndkeeper wrote asking for repairs I to the ponnd. and it was decided that the work be done by the Corporation labourer. A complaint was made by Mr. Atkinson regarding the water lying in the tables at the corner of Jackson and Beach-streets, and it was resolved to put down what metal was required to remedy the same. The office hours of the Council were fixed as follows :— 10.30 to 1 and 2 to 4.30 ; Satur-daj-3,10.30 to 1 ; Wednesday evenings, 7to 9. The tender of Mr. A. Coulter for the supply of about 47. r > yards of river bed metal was accepted. Mr. H. Knowles, the nightsoil contractor, applied to have his contract with tho Council transferred to Mr. J. J. Ilebbond. It was resolved, on the motion of Councillor Homy, heconded by Councillor Burridgo, that the contract be transferred, provided that the matter of sureties, &c, be satisfactory, and on paying any legal expenses required. The Mayor reported that the deputation appointed at the last meeting had waited on J the Railway Commifisioners in reference to ! widening the main road and alteration of the cattle stops, and he hoped that the matter would be settled in a satisfactory way at an early date. The Secretary of the Woollen Mill wrote enclosing cheque for rates, and asking that a lamp be erected at Korokoro. It was resolved that the matter bo referred to the Public Works Committee. The collector of the dog tax wrote as to the difficulty of collecting the fees, and on the motion of Councillor Henry, seconded by Councillor Crofts, it was resolved that proceedings be taken by the Town Clerk to enforce paj'ment of tho tax. With regard to the repairs on the Huttroad and Jackson-street, the Council decided that the work be proceeded with by day labour, under supervision of the Borough Engineer. On tho motion of Councillor Burridge, seconded by Councillor Crofts, it was decided that tho Council obtain the hire of the manual engine and purchase the plant required from the Wellington City Council, on condition that an indemnity be given by the Potono Fire Brigade as to tho proper treatment of the engine, and on the Brigade undertaking to repay the sum advanced within twelve months. Complaints having been made as to the damage done by cows belonging to a person in the Borough, it was decided that uotieo be sent to the owner tliat if he did not prevent his cattle straying, proceedings would be instituted against him. Some exception wan taken to tho amount of the fee for the Clerk of the Licensing Committee, and on the motion of Councillor Henry, seconded by Councillor P. Smith, it was resolved that the sum of 10s Gil only be paid the Clerk (Mr. W. P. James). It was decided that the Town Clerk be authorised to repair the road along the Esplanade. Tho Finance Committee drew tho attention of the Council to the increasing cost of the street lighting, and recommended the Council to considoi" whether some steps could not be taken by which better valuo might bp obtained for the amount expended. Some discussion ensued on tho matter, and eventually it was decided, on the motion of Councillor Henry, socondod by Councillor Frasor, that a deputation, consisting of the Mayor and Councillors Jackson, Mothes, and Burridgo, wait upon the representative of the Gulcher Company with reference to lighting tho borough by electricity, a report to bo brought up at noxt inoeting. Councillor^ Burridgo moved, and it was Boconded by ' Councillor Henry, that a deputation consisting of the Mayor and Councillors Mothes, Henry, and Burridgo, wait upon tho Harbour Board and urge upon that body tho desirability of erecting a public wharf tit Petone to meet the requirements of tho district. The motion was supported by the Mayor and Councillors, and carried unanimously. Accounts amounting to .£9S 11s wero passed for payment, and tho Council then adjourned.
