T HE MAYOR'S SALARY.
,x»O, x »O THE EDITOR. Sir-I see by " • PP o*-™0 *-™ «J y° nr P a P« *■ tha City Council «- to -> d . paling with th above question at to-night* meeting, hope the proposal for" Jjn uwreaae of salar; will be rejeoted. W*** J«»» *-R° Mt Duthie, the then MayiV, swept the Angtfti stable-several "retrenchments took place and tho salaries of offioialß were re duced to their market value. But since tha there has been a steady more w in «alttie of Corporation officers, the latwrc bemsr tn City Surveyor. The moat exhaustive piece o engineering whioh thia official has had t de»l with has been the metalling of th strootn, and yet bin salary has by two aadi tions been inoreased from .£250 to £400 : year. And now comes a proposal from i Councillor soaroe twenty minutea in his seat that the salary of tho Mayor be increased t JB3OO. There was a time when bo large i salary oould be justified on the gronnd that Mayor was expeoted to roliovo cases o <loutitution ; bnt ainoe the introduction o the charitable rato this expenditure haa no been neoenary; and it seems intolerable that while the average citizen yearl finds his power to pay rates becomin less, the Counoil continue to inoreas the expenditure. There ia not the slight csfc doubt that the recent drainage loa was lost on account of the dread whioh rati payers felt at the unknown jobß whioh woul have been made out of it. At the preset there exists on the flat between thegasworli and Clyde-quay an amount of typhoid whio ia most alarming, and yet, if Connp ■were naked to vote money for remedn moaeures, the answer would ba that thei were no available funds. This anawor shonl be given to those who seek to inoreaas tl Mayor'« salary. Two of the boat Mayoi tho city hot had did the work for £100, an 'the present Mayor knew what the salary wi -when he took office. I can only say that ■Councillors vote the increase it ia becani 'they are dealing with other people's mone; tfor I feel certain that not one of them won! in their own business pay a larger salary f( the services rendered. I am, &c, 14th May, 1891. Jacques.
