MR. J. KNIGHT DECLARED ELECTED. i Mr. James Knight was to-day declared, by Mr. Kobinson, R.JL, to have beon elected to a scat upon the Hutt Borough Council in placo of Mr. John Welkins, who was unseated through an informality in tho voting. The yptesrecordotj at the election were re-connted at the Magistrate's Court this morning by Mr. It. K. Jaokaon (Returning Officer) and Constable Crniokahauk (Clork to tho Lower Hutt Court), when the numbers polled woro announced to bo aa followa :— J. R. Ranson 135 J. Cudby 127 H. D. Atkinson 117 F. Cooper ... ... 103 T. P. Allen 101 J. Kniuhfc 85 J. Wilkins 84 This result was obtained in consequence of the vote of H. D. O'Callaghan having been disallowed. His Worship therefore declared Mr. Knight nnd tho othor fivo persons named before him to havo boen duly oleotcd Councillors. Mr. Wilkins was ordered to pay the costs of tho proceedings takon to uneoat him, whioh amounted to £1) 19s 4d. THE JSIGHT HOVJiS MOVE* MBJNV IN MELBOURNE. * — . Intelligence ia represented by a fomale figure, bearing a lighted torch in her right hand, to symbolise her illuminating powor. The Scales of Justice— tho only weapon she has weed in all her great social victories— are suspended from hor girdle. The figure U winged, to typify her celestial origin ; tho wings encompass and throw their protecting shado abont the figure of Libour, m»rt)hing]by her Bide Labour is represented by a strong, resolute male figure, striding boldly and fearlessly forward, with a hammer over hia ahoulder and a wedt?o in hia risht hand-tho'a two toolarobrcsonting tho greatest meohanioal forceß known to man. In the background fs a column npon which the trophy iH raised to tbo groateat viotory yet aohioved for toiling humanity— tho oight houra movomont. The whole of tho taatorial for tho masonry has beon generously given by friends of tho pioneers—including the Haroonct granite for the steps by Mr. R. C. Brown, and the porphyry marble for the pedestal mainly through the KOOd officoa of Mr. Peter Wright, of Benambra. Tho »tone ia obtained from Tallftugatta, Victoria. The memorial ia expootcd to ooat altogether about .£IOOO, towardß whioh nbr.tit £1000 has already beon received, in addition to tho valne of the materials donated. Tho granite stops bavo beon plfiood in position, and by tho anniversary of Eight Honrs Day neit year tho pionoors hope to sco tho whole work oomploted._ Tho ceremony of laying tho memorial stone will be performo.l at neon today.—The Ago.
