I UNITED PREBB ASSOCIATION. | Auckland, 6th January. At a meeting to-day of the oreditors of David Gouk, shipwright, a bankrupt, it was announoed that the debtor refused to appear, and therefore the meeting whioh was oallen in order that he should be examined lapsed. It is nnderstood that the Official Assignee will take further proceedings. Hyndman, who was injured in the Huntly mine disaster, is progressing favourably at the Waikato Hospital. This afternoon Mr. Rees, M.H.R., had a meeting with tho Chamber of Commerce on the subjeot of native lands, when he suggested that the Government, through a board, should deal with these lands as Crown lands. The Council droided to reoommend the Chamber to consider the matter at their meeting on the 15th insfc. Dunedin, 6th January. Campbell, alias Christie, appeared again at the Polioe Oourt to-day, charged with the sticking np at Rookland Station, but, on the application of tho police, the case was adjourned. % The high gales of last week have caused great havoc in the country distriots among the orchards, but tho weather south of Dunedin otherwise has been very good. The annual report of the Benevolent Trustees shows that during the past year 3397 persons were relieved, being an increase of 250 on the previous year. Casual oases were largely in excess, while permanent enses show a decrease of 70. The weekly average at the institution was 210, the charge being at the rate of 5s Id per head per week. The amount disbursed in outdoor relief was £6117, a decrease of £325 on the previous year. The total amonnt expended at the institution and outdoor relief shows a reduction of over £500. Christchurch, 6th Jannary. Captain Martin, for eight years comman der of the E Battery of Artillery Volunteers, has resigned. Great regret is felt by all Volunteers at his resignation. Hokitika, 6th January. The westerly gales are apparently now over, and rummer has commenoed at last. The Bank of New Zealand shipped to-day 70120z of gold, valued at £28,050. The oiher Banks' returns are also very satisfactory.
