ST. PAUL'S PARISH. TO THE EDITOR.
Fib— l regret to notice tbat "Another Churchman " only states part of the troth in bu letter, and in evidently ignorant of factfi. I am sorry to say St. Paol's parish contains a small party, who, for the past six mouths, have ondeavonred to stir np strife ; and a great deal of tbis nnnecesaary fnas about Canon Howell is duo to them. As to tho absence of the ohoir last Sunday, a decided improvement in the service was the result it being of an earnost and more congregational oharactor than heretofore. Tbo vostry would be justified now in diapensine with the services of oertain memborß of the choir, and this opinion ii shared by more than On* Lotal Churchman. Thorndon, 13th October. TO THB EDITOK. Sir— Your correspondent, " Chdrohmnn," has set on foot a very important enquiry. Has the Bishop the power to defy tho wishes of the parishioners ? The feeling, I bolieve, is almost unanimous in St. Paul a parish tbat Canon iiowell should be appointed Curate or assistant to Mr. Still. The question ongbt to be asked in the Synod on what grounds thn Bishop can rofnso to license a ourato ehoson by the parisboners. The Bishop has carried his displeasure towards Canon Uowell farther than alleged by jour correspondent. It is well known in town that Mr. Still telegraphed from the South askicg Canon Howell to perform the sorvices at fit. Pant's yesterday, and tbat the Bishop refused to give tho Canon permission. Indeed, since his license expired the Bishop baa prohibited him from acting in ohurch matters at all. Sir. it is hoped that better connsels will prevail, otherwise Mr. Still and the parishioners will lose the service* of an able and zealous curate, with whom they are in full Hympathy. i.et the Bisbop romomber that in the Anglican Church there are three ordors, bnt *' despotism " is not one of them. I am, &c, Anothir Churchman. 13th October, 1800.
