It is regarded as imminent that he will reaeive either the Secretaryship of India or Ireland, and in the event of the latter Mr. A. J. Balfour would lead the Houbo of Commons in Bucorssion to Mr. W. H. Smith, who is likely to aooept a peerage. 7th July. Sir J. F. Garriok, formerly Agent-General for Queensland, who wai asked to oontest a Beat at the next general election, has finally deoided not to oome forward.
