Replying to a debate on the Irish Land Purchase Bill in the Bouse of Commons, Mr. Balfonr said,- in reference to suggestions that the pnrohase of land would be placed under the control of County Councils, that it would be a rash and dangerous 1 prinoiple to adopt at present, and one most likely to thwart the purchase. He was not opposed to Mr. Parnell'a soheme providing it was made subordinate to the Government plan. On a division being taken, the Bill was read a second time by 348 to 268. 2nd May. Speaking in the House of Commons today, the Marquis of Hartington deolarod that land purchase in Ireland mußt precede local government.
