Ma^terton. 29th April. Considerable excitement was created in town over tlifi election for Sobool Commitleo, wbioh took placo on Monday eyonin? lust. Tho Thoatro Royal was crowded with householders, the choir being ocoupied by Mr. J. G. Maokay. At ono time tho proceeding were thrown into a complete uproar by tho obstrnetiveness of a member of the outgoing Committee, who had several times to be oallod to order before ho would resume his seat. It is not likely that tke now Committee, which is a fairly intelligent one, will bo quite iva extravagant as its predecessor, jvhoßO chief characteristic appeared to., bo ite antagonism to the Board, The case iv which Mrs. Cranmer, licensees of tha Star Hotel, was charged with having on her premises a portion of a distilling plant, was concluded on Tuesday morning, when tho information was dismissed. The wholo of Monday afternoon was occupied in hearing evidence, and at 8 p.m. the Bench (which was composed of Colonel Roberts, R.M., and Mr. A. W. JJenall, .T.P.), retired to consider its verdiot. Shortly afterwards tho K.M. resumed bia seat on tho Bench, and announced that ho and tho J'ustico could not agree, and a re-hoaring would consequently be held on the following morning before a full Bonoh. On Tuesday another Justico waa on the Bench, in tbs person of Mr. W. W. McCardlo; but counsel for the icforniant objected to such a Court, and applied for a remand. The Bonoh announced that it could not^rant tho application ; whoronpon counsel for the informant expressed a desire to withdraw tho information. Defendant's counsel, however, strenuously opposed snob a course being adopted, and asked for a dismissal. After some consideration by tho Bench, the case was dismissed on its merits. The R.M., as a matter of course, was favourable to tho administration of the Aot according tr> its reading, but his fellowJustices contendod that Mrs. Cranmor had been tho victim of a foul conspiracy, and was entirely innocent, and on these grounds dismissed the case. Although the decision is to some extent a popular ono, it is considered to be altogether at variance with tho Act, And likely to establish a dangerous precedent An interesting match at football is to bo plsysd here on Saturday next, when the Alastev'on Club tries conclusions with the first fifteen of the lied Stars. Betting is slightly in favour of tho former. The weather during tuo p-va* few days lias been exceptionally rlno and pleasant, and as a result grass* is becoming plentiful. Cautkkton, 29th April.
