The Death of Hermit.

The death of Hermit, tho celebrated English stallion, is announced to-day, and the event revives some of the most sensational memories of the plunging days of the Marquis of Hastings and his reoklcss associates. Hermit won the eyermeraorable Derby of ISG7, and has sinoe his retirement from tho traok proved himself one of the most successful stallions in England. In 1882 Hermit's stock won £41,608, whioh ttill remains the highest on record, although Galopin's stock last year, thanks to Donovan's suoorsson, won nearly as much, viz., J843.516. In 1885 and ISB4 Hermit headed the list of English sires with £30.121 and .£29,236 respectively. Last year Hermit stood Eizth on the list with £12,206.

An inquest was held 'at the Lower Hntt this morning on the body of Corneliua Desmond, who died snddenly yesterday, and a Verdict of " Death from heart disease," was returned. Mr. Jibenezor Baker was the Coroner. In accordance with instructions from the Registrar of the Supreme Court, Mesura. J. M. The Thorndon Mutual Improvement Assopiation held its usual weekly meeting, in the Molcsworth-street Schoolroom, on Monday evening. About 45' ladies and gentlemen were present, and two numbers were elected. It was announced that the Hey. p. H. Laws would shortly deliyer a leoture nnder tie auspices of the Association, on an interesting subjeot, when a collection would bo made in did of the fund for renovating the schoolroom. The journal was read by the editor, Mr. J. W. Hall, and was highly enjoyed by those present.

The members of the Harbour Board held a special meeting this afternoon for the purposo of considering certain matters in connection with tho Hunter-street leases. There was a full attendance of the Board, Captain Rose being in the chair. Tho proceedings were conducted in committee. These most rare, exquisite, and chaste carvings were imported direct from Florence and Pisa by Siijnor LiiiKi Pofrciolini, and the whole will be Hold absolutely without reHerve. Messrs.
