And what is more, I never found a 6ingor who in his or her hoart really objected to an encore. If they toll you they do, take my word for it, it is a piece of over-done modesty. Personally, if 1 feel it impossible to sing again, I Bay so. This happened at Auckland, and tho audience accepted my statement. But if lam in good trim I don't caro a snap how lomr Igo on. Fellow singers of mine havo raid to me fit Homo : This is a great imposition ; you ought to put it down. I say tbat is all rubbish. Neither you nor 1 nor any other man oan put down encores. It ia the Briton's way, and he will keep to it. And it is only fair to say that those same singors will pop up again without very much provocation directly they sco a ohanco of an encore Pah I its human nature, ApplaußO is the breath of life- to a singer. Evon in oratorios— excopt in oathedrala or churches, of course. How else are you to know if thoy aro roilly feeling what what yon aro Binging to them ? To sing all through ono of those deadly-lively timoa whero a wholo evening passes without anyono putting their hands together is a torriblo experience Yon should hear them applaud an oratorio at Manchester."
