It has been decided to appoint in connection with tho Chamber committees representing the goldfields, agricultural, and local industry interests, and a Board of Arbitration to settle by arbitration Btrikes and all disputes between capital and labour. At a meeting of tho City Council, a report was received from tho Vainer showing that tho total reduction which has been made in the valuation of properties since last year amounts to ,£20,636. The present valnation is i! 292,356. Tho Mayor said that the Council must remember that meant a reduction of .£2OOO in their income. At tho first annnal meeting of the Lonehand Gold Mining Company, the balancesheet showed that the year's receipts were J62991 19s sd, and the expenditure £2691, leaving a balance of .£3OO 193 sd. Wanganui, 2lst March. Bishop Hadfield, at present on a visit to the Rev. A. 0. Williams, Putiki, will hold a confirmation service in Christ Church on Sunday. The enquiry into tho cause of the late fire in the Avenue occupied the Coroner's Court two days, and was finished to-day. The jury found that tho evidence did not show how the fire originated, and that the jury considered the statements of the two witnesses Spriggens and Low unsatisfactory. The Premier, Sir Harry Atkinson, who arrivod here yesterday, accompanied by his private secretary, Mr. Amelias Smith, proceeded on his journey North by the afternoon train. Timaru, 21et March. Harry Money, a racecourse babitu<s, was fined .£5 for playing * lottery crame at tho Trot Meeting ' yesterday. The defence offered was that the winner of the pool received the whole, making tho game a sweepstake, and be gave Money a gratuity. The evidence, however, showed that Money made a deduction for himself. At the Resident Magistrate's Court James Sanderson was committed for trial on four charges of forgery and uttering. Dunedik, 21st March. At the annual meeting of the Technical Classes Association, the report submitted showed that the classes of last winter had been vory successful, 283 pupils having attended.
