NOT A BREWER— A CHEMIST.
Mr. Brett, missionary to the City Police, speaking on Sunday at the Central Hall, Shoreditch, London, said the brewer of to-day was not simply a brewer, he was a chemist.
By the aid of the " Brewers' Mixing Book" (2s. 6d.), and the "Publicans' Mixing Book " (3s. 6d.), the brewer and the publican were rendered almost independent of the maltster. For exposing the tricks of the liquor trade at Woodberry Down he had been pelted with eggs. From long personal experience of the brewing business he asserted that, in spite of Adulteration Acts and the police, drinkers of intoxicating liquor were being poisoned wholesale. After all, no poison was worse in its effects than alcohol, lacking which strong drink would not be consumed.
