TEMPERANCE COLUMN. A STRIKE PLACARD.
Another monster strike ! Five millions of English, Irish, Scotch, and Welsh, have struck against the tyrant masters, Ale, Wine, and Spirits. Follow countrymen! Wake up ! Come out in thousands ! Be no longer slaves to the cruel oppressor — Strong Drink ! One hundred and twenty-three millions of pounds were taken from the pockets of the British public last year by the robber Drink, and who can estimate the poverty, the crime, and the misery the liquor produced ? Felloiv countrymen ! You are called upon to break off all connection with the drink tyrant, and join the national strike. You will then be able to take your hard-earned money home, and that will supply plenty of food, good clothing, better furniture, and a happy fireside ; and with the giving up of drink, will follow (as surely as two and two are four) such an increased demand for all kinds of provisions, wearing apparel, and useful goods, that short employ, low wages, and complainings will be well-nigh unheard of. Fellow countrymen, and women, too, all of you join the drink strikers! Temperance secretaries throughout the kingdom are the appointed agents. Thomas Cramp enrolls members at East Grinstead.
