FOOTBALL. THE JUNIOR CUP.

Tec flrßt fifteen of St. Patriok's College and tho cecond team of tha Athletic Club journeyed to Petone by train on Saturday for tho purpose of deciding a Junior Cup match. Tho Rugby Union did not provide a Teferee, and the rosnH: was that a series »f squabbles between the teams ended in the Athletic captain (Otho WtaQerald) rilling his men off tho field. A bout a doxon of tho team obeyed instructions, but tho othoro did not leave until they saw it was no use remaining. Tho whole trouble nroso through the want of a compotent tofer_e»> The person who consented to fill tho position was a rcsidont of the Hott, and, in addition to a groat ignorance of tho rules, ho showod a most vacilating spirit, inasmuch as ho gave* a decision one minute and altered it the next. In fact a more thoroughly incompetent, person for such an important posiSkm could 1 not have been soleotcd. Thero nrc? dozens' of oxperienced gentlemen in Wolßngton who are willing to act as roferecs^ and it ife 1 a disgracefnl thing that two teams should be s«nt eovou or eifT^tmilos out of town to play a ma'tol'/ on the off ohsnee < f picking up someone on the gronnd to do the rofereeing. Disputes betweou the teams were endless, and hftd not wiser counsels provailod several of tho players would probably havo come to blows. In the first spell the Colloffo bojs obtainod two tries, but the shots at goal wero not miccoßsful. The team in question had mnclr. the host of the play in this torm, nnd ought, to havo scored mare frequently. The Athletios, however, did much urltor than expeoted, eomo of their /ait rushes nearly resulting in a score. In lb» second spell &. College player was collared, b»t touohod down in a gorso bush. Tho score was dißputed, the Athletics contending that it badbeen agreed that the ball was dead when it got into a bush. Tho other siue- ' howovor, argued that that rnlo only appliod wh«s the ball was kickod on to a hush aidnot when it was placed thorn. Thcrr then took- a shot at goal under protest from the Athletioß. A little later on another college player (rot over tho lino and this score was also disputod. About a qnarter ol an hour before the end of the game a breach of the ruloa ooonrred, and a dispute arose The umpires disagreed, and the referee ordered » scrum to bo formed. This was objooted to by St. Patrick's team, and he then gore that tonm a free kiok. Tho Athletio skipper appealed against the Beoond decision, and as tho College boys wero taking a shot at goal hn walked off the ikld, and ordered, his mon to follow, which moeC tit them did. The attempt at goal was succosufnl, and the Collogo team claim tho match by seven points to lovi> r made us as follows :—Tringham, two trios; Cooney and Shoedy, one try each; and agoal by Sheedy from a freo kiok. It is a great pity that the gamo was not played ont, at) the Athlatica could havo appealed to tho Union again&t the scores whioh they disputed. AnionirM, t,l><3 spectators wore Archbishop Redwood and* many of tho Catholic olorgy. Tho rtth'otios nave claimod tho match on the irround that the Sfc. Patriok's ColleßO team should have abided by tho firKr, decision of the rofereo with retfswd to tho freo kick. The matoh bntween the Wellington Moond* and the Naval first was played at tho Fark on Saturday, and contrary to general oxpeotation resulted in a win for the tho NavaV» by two goals points) to thrco trios (throif points). In the firat spell tho WolliugtonH, by eSoolleut passing and faHtplay, oompiotoly nonplussed the Navals, and I'yko and Fasoho Bcorod two trios, noither of whioh, liowovor, was oonvorted. The second spell was more even, tho Navals playing with moro combination, and eventually Mahony scored for the Blues, and Robinson converted. The Wellingtons now mado matters very lively, and, after a fino drib' blingrush by the forwards, Morgan obtainocS a try. The attempt at goal woo a failure. Towards the end of tho game tho Navaloworked tho ball into thoir opponents' 25'k, and from tho throw-in Robinson got possession of the ball, and ncorod a try between the posts, whioh the same player converted into a goal. Tho game ondod without any furthor score. Allen (2), K. Dunoan.Fascho, Morgan, and Rolling were tho boßt for thelosers; whilst Rabo, Mahonoy, Robinson. Dungan, Bell, Lowater, and Parsons weretho pick of tho Navata. Tho umpires wero Messrs. Baloombe and W. Brown, Mr. H. Roberts being referee. The Union-Melroae second matoh took place at Newtown on Saturday, and ondod in a draw, both Bides scoring four points. For the Unions, Pndnoy and Ryan obtained tries, one of which was converted by Pndnoy. On tho other Bide, Bakor and Tome orossod the line, Campbell plaoing a goal froja ono of them. The umpires were Moss™. H. Hyams and Hoar, Mr. M'Cardcll boing referee. Tho reßultg of tho Junior Cup matohe3 up to tho present aro as follow :—
