Accidents and Fatalities.
IBtTslbgra.ph.l (Our Own Correipondent.) Gbettown Nobth, This Dat. On Saturday morning about 9 o'clock Fred. Collier, employed at Baillie'a sawmills, Papawai, was hauling a log from the bnsh to the Buamahunga Ferry when the log slipped and jammed Collier's leg against the aide of the sledge. He seized hold of a limb of a tree and hang on till the sledge had passed on, thereby saving his life, but his foot is crnshed, the ankle bone being smashed. After a deal of difficulty he was brought to Greytown Hospital, arriving about 5 o'olock in the evening. Dr. Bey, who attended him, has hopes of saving his foot. Upon enquiry this morning Collier was said to be doing well. He is well known in this district. | united pbess association.] Dunbdin, This Dat. James Pithers, newspaper runner, latterly employed as a (jardener, committed suicide at fioslyn by shooting himself with a gun. He had been much depressed in spirits since his return from Sydney, whither he had gone on a visit to an only relative three months ago. A month ago his mind was slightly unhinged. He was 50 yeara of age j and unmarried.
