[by klkceic telegraph.— copyright.] [united fbkbs association.] London. 4th October. Captain Jorgensen, who is attempting to sail to Melbourne in a 30ft boat, has arrived at Madeira. The Marquis of Hartington, at Abordeen, in addressing a meeting, charged Mr. Gladstone with hopelessly shattering the Liberal party, and promoting every fantastical fad in order to gain fresh political supporters. At the Chnrch Congress to-day, Edward Terry, the aotor, read a paper on the staple and its effects. The paper went generally in defence of the stage, and argued that tho charges brought by tho clergy were prejudiced against the theatre, which had been found a necessity of the present time. sth October. At the Church Congress, Bishop Barry said the federation of tho churches ought to bo the aim of the Anglican communion ; and the colonies needed a greater freedom in church government and ritualism. In referring to the Primacy of Australia, the Church Times states that the colonial synod was clearly wrong in electing Canon 1 Saumeriz Sirith for that position, and therefore the action is ultra vires, and it was necegsary to commence the proceedings afresh. Mexico, sth October. A heavy cyclone has visited the Island of Carmen, in tho Gulf of Campeachy, and 30 vessels were wrecked. Many of the houses suffered, and numerous lives were lost. The various Agents-General have decided to inspect, on the 18th instant, the coalsaving process recently invented in Glasgow, and for which it is intended to apply for patent rights in New South Walos. At the Church Congress, Bishop Thornton, of Ballarat, said the colonial church was quite distinct from that of England. Bishop Barry held that the bonds of sympathy between tho churches was of much value. Bishop Selwyn paid a tribute to the valuable work done by Anglican missionaries. Both the Bishops of Ballarat and Cardiff supported Bishop Barry in advocating a Homo reunion of the churches. In addressing a meeting at Stilling to-day the Marquis of Hartington said that at present the scheme of Federation was ambiguous, and it was ridiculous to assert that Home Rule was a necessary condition and precedent. At a meeting in Edinburgh held last night for tho purpose of wishing the Earl of Hopotoun farewell, tho Provost presided. In tho course of his remarks the now Governor of Victoria denied that he was an invalid and seeking a sanatorium in Victoria. He stated he intended to ignore politics. Referring to his appointment, he said a young man was suited to a young colony, and he was not called upon to pronounce an opinion on federation. Ho was hopeful to strengthen the natural bonds between Australia and England. Latest Intelligence.
