The debris from the wooden houses at Johnstown which had been washed up by the flood into an embankment threo-quartors of a mile long and 40ft high, caught fire and hundreds of the unfortunate people who had taken refuge on it were bnrnoi to death. So far 1100 bodies have been recovered. It is reported that 70 people also suffered a Bimilar fate in the debris at a place called Nineva.
