♦ [UNITED PBEBB ASSOCIATION.! Auckland, 30th May. Upon searching the house of a man named Robinson this morning, Deteotives Httghes and Ede found eighteen valuable books, moat of which had been missed front the Auckland Free Library during the pai it six months, and which included all the works which have been stolen from that institution with the exception of one or two volumes. Bobinson was sentenced to four months' hard labour this morning on another ol large of larceny, An extensive sale of land was held yesterday at Cochrane's mart, when about 50 lots were disposed of by order of the Registrar of the Supreme Court. The sections, which were situated in various country distn ots, were sold to meet the demands for rates due upon them, and, therefore, very low prices were taken. The Silver Queen licensed holding at Maratoto, Thames, recently forfeited for non-working, was sold to-day in the Warden's Court to Mr. Fagen for .£145 10s. In a letter to the Auckland branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, Miss Ackerman, the well-known Temperance advocate, states that she will endeavour to have a female lecturer appointed to this colony by the Union, and that the various branches should see that such a scheme was self-supporting. The officers of H.M.S. Dart, which leaves for Sydney to-morrow, entertained their local friends at a dance in the Choral Hall last evening. Chbistchuech, 30th May. At Lyttelton to-day John NeUson, a sailor, was committed for trial for passing a gilded sixpence for a half sovereign at the bar of the Eoyal Hotel. In reply to a request of the Lyttelton Orphanage Committee for means of instruction for the children in the Orphanage, the Board of Education decided that it had no power to do anything more than provide instruction for children in the public sohools under its control. [ # Dunedin, 30th May. At a meeting of dentists, letters favourable to the formation of a Dentists' Union were received from dentists in Otago and Southland. Mr. H. Purdie was elected delegate to the Dental Conference. The medioal adviser of Mr. A.* F. "W. Lorie, local manager of the Government InBuranoe Department, insists on his giving up the business of life insurance altogether. Blhnhbim, 30th May. Mr. Hastings, Secretary of the Dunedin Exhibition, met the local Committee to-day, the Mayor in the chair. It was deoided to engage five bays at the Exhibition. Interest in the affair is rapidly growing, and there is no doubt that Marlborough will make a good show. Woodville, This Dat. At a meeting last night it was deoided to form a rifle olub under the new government regulations.
