Hutt County Council.
♦ An ordinary mooting of the Hutt County Counoil wob held at tho Counoil'a offloo, Lambton-quay, this morning. There wero present— Councillors T. t'Wakeham (Chairman), J. Taylor, F. Darby, F. Death, D. Speedy, C. W. Drown, Barton, S. Lancaster, and P. Monaghan. The manager of the Wellington Gas Com* pany wrote agreeing to tho conditions dictated by the Council in giving them permission to lay gas-pipes along the Hutt-road to Kaiwarra, but protesting against the six months' maintenance of the road over tho pipetraok, three months being, he thought, tho ÜBual period. Councillor Taylor complained that in carrying out the work the company was encroaching upon tho loot path. An irregular discussion took place on the subjeot, and Councillor Taylor ultimately moved that if any complaint be made by tho inhabitants of Kaiwarra or tho Town Board, the Inspector of Roads have authority to compel the company to so carry out the work as to entail tho least possible inconvenience to the travelling public, 'i his was seconded by Councillor Darby nnd agreed to. A circular was received from Mr, Vinoent Pyke, M.H.It., Chairman of the Dunedin Exhibition authorities, impressing upon the Council the desirableness of securing a good colleotion of mineral exhibits for the Exhibition. The Council declined to take any action in the matter. The Sydenham Borough Council forwarded a circular requesting the Council to cooperate in securing legislation next session empowering local bodies, on tho security of their rates, to insure against loss by fire all properties within their respeotivo boundaries. The receipt of tho circular was ordered to be acknowledged. The Road Inspector reported that cattle trespass on tho roads in Manparoa riding was a great nnisance, but the duty of providing a pound was one that fell upon tho Road Board. There was an old pound at tho Upper Hutt, but the owner of the property would not carry it on unless he was guaranteed .£lO a year in addition to the poundage fees. It was decided that the Inspootor of Police should be asked to take steps to diminish the nuisanoe. An application by Alfred Monk, of South Makara, for a slaughtering license, was granted. Councillor Lancaster moved that tenders be called for the lease of the Kaiwarra tollgate and weigh bridgo for either one or two years, at tho option of the tenderer. Councillor Darby seconded the motion, which was agreed to. A rough estimate of reoeipta and expenditure was submitted by the Treasurer, showing that, after providing for all contingencies, there should be a small balance in hand at the end of the current financial year. Councillor Speedy expressed gratification that, aocording to these estimates, there was no likelihood that the county would be saddled with a poor rate, as had been feared. Accounts to the amount of JE37B, and charitable aid claims of J637 2s, wero passed for payment.
