THE CITY DRAINAGE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sic— Having to address a meeting of the ratepayers when proposing tho adoption of the Council's scheme of workß, I do not intend to now join in any newspaper controversy on tho subject ; but as the extent of the drainage works seems to be misunderstood, I ventnre to enclose the schedule giving the size and description of every drain, and if too lengthy to publish in full, I hope you will be able to afford it space in an abridged form. By this schedule it will bo seen that drainage ia extended to every street where there _is any reasonable pretext. All offensive, open drains are enclosed, and decayed box culverts are replaced with brick. By this scheme the oity will be efficiently drained, subject only to the objection that the harbour is the outfall. Then, even if a separate system to divert sewage is ultimately resolved upon, very little of tho scheme now proposed oould be omitted, since the drains proposed are still necessary for storm, laundry, and kitchen water. Will the objectors to the scheme say which dram should be omitted, or, will those that style this scheme fragmentary Bay which street is left without drainage? Mere random condemnation is valueless. The City Council recommends the scheme, believing that it will amply provide for the present wants of the city, and for one I am anxious to be told wherein it falls short. — I am, &c, Jno. Duthie.
