DUST OH !
Stß,— Can I claim your kind indulgence for tho further ventilation of the muoh- vexed question of tho removal of rubbish. Tho syatom ia to many people impracticable, for this reason, the accumulation of ashes, garbage, &c, in a honsohold of three to five poraona, will, during tho courao of a week, amount to 4 to 5 oubio feet, whioh would weigh from 280 to 350 lbs. I would ask, sir, how can the officers of tho Corporation expect that women shall carry thia weight for distanoes varying from 30 to 90 feet, for it is an undeniable fact that in a groat nnmbor of households thero is no one else to take the box or boxes to tho kerbstone at tho times specified in directions. In curtain parts of tho oity thoro is a daily collection, no doubt on account of tho thicker population, bnt snrely there is not such a vast difference in thia respect from othor parts of the town where thore is only a weekly sorvioe, and people who aro not lucky onougn to live on the lino of daily visitation might oortainly expeot, and ishonld havo eithor a bi or tri-weekly service, which would really bo a better nyßtem for the duo preservation of health. Trusting you will publish this as a mild protest from many who, through an incomplete system, are muoh inconvenienood, but whioh, if completed, would be a vory groat boon. i I am, Ao., LUTUM. 6th May. TO THK EDITOR. Sir— "Puzzled Housekeeper,'^ in your issno of last ovening, oreates an imaginary diffionlty in regard to the removal of rubbish, probably through not hayingr carefully read the regulations as published. Jf. he will refer to them ho will sea tb it, although the rubbish-box must not be plaoed on the kerb teforo the arrival of the oart or left there after ita doportnro, it is expressly provided that tho box may be placed within 10ft of the building line. Surely it is no great hardship to conform to this regulation, especially as the box may be of any dimenaiona under that required to hold three oubio feet. Of course, if it is the case that the dustman either neglects or rofnsos to oroBS the building line to obtain the box— as I havo been assured is the oase —then it will bo neoessary for the Corporation authorities to take steps to compel fulfilment of contraot, the dear intention being to permit householders to retain the rubbish box within thoir premises until the contractor should call to remove it. I havo heard strong oomplajnta made aa to the neglect of tho contractors to visit cortain streota on tho days indicated, theroby occasioning great inconvenienoe to housekeepers, some of whom have had the rubbish removod by private oarts. — I am, Ac, Jambs Carson. Constable-street, Newtown.
