The Piako County Council have adopted a resolution urging the completion of the Thames-Te Aroha railway as a work highly advantageous to the district and remunerative to the Government. The Hon. E. C. J. Stevens has returned from the Thamea, and will leave for Wellington on Thursday. Ab the result of low prices for stocks of butter and fruit, numbers of tho country Bottlers are turning their attention to a more extensive cultivation of breadstuffs. An effort is being- made by the County Council of the Waikato to establish a School of Agriculture in that district. The cutter Venus, which left for Gisborne to-day, has on board a qnantity of gear for the floating of the brigantine Clansman. A. company is to be formed to work a promising coal find lately discovered at the Great Barrier Island. In respeot of the dispute between the Harbour Board and Mr. P. Lanigan. the contractor for the Calliope Dock, Mr. Ware, who was appointed arbitrator, has completed his enquiry, and finds that Mr. Lanigan has been overpaid, and is indebted to to the Board in a sum of £1928. Mr. Lanigan having on his side revoked Mr. Ware's authority, the arbitration proceedings were abandoned, and the Board have decided to leave the contractor to any remedy he has at law. Captain Corbett, son of Major-General Corbett, and who himself held a Queen's commission, died in tho Hamilton Hospital to-day, Mr. Withy was to have left England on Mb return trip to Auckland on 12th April. Cheistchubch, 16th April. The total receipts on account of the recent Christchurch Eegatta amounted to £172, and the expenses to 18s. Richard Jaokman, a labourer at Leeßton, has been arrested on a charge of criminal assault on his daughter, aged 15. Inveecabgill, 16th April. At the opening of the new chemical leoture hall at the High School this morning, Sir B. Stout delivered an addresss on eduoation, the general tenor of his remarks being that the educational system of the oolony was not complete till the poorest children in it had access to the High School. Dunedin, 16th April. At a meeting of ladioß interested in having a separate ward for women in connection with the Hospital, after an address by Dr. Batohelor those present agreed to collect a certain sum each, by whioh means the necessary amount will, it is believed, be speedily raised.
