A CORRECTION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir— ln your Saturday's Supplement, under the Leading of " The Forty-ninth Anniversary of the Foundation of the Colony, by J. H. Wallace," I beg to tike exception to the last partgrapn of the artiolo, which is ontirely misleading, so far as dates and names of places are mentioned. After alludinjf to the successful colonisation of New Zealand by the New Zealand Company, Mr. Wallaoe says:—" The first immigrants arrived (meaning Auckland) in November, 1842— Duchess of Argyle and Jane Gifford containing 561 immigrants." This is not correct. The Bhip Duohesß of Argyle (belonging to the late Steakem-Strokom, of Greenook) and barque Jane Gifford both belt up the Waitemata on the same day, namely, 9th Ootober,lB42, and not November, as stated by Mr. Wallaoe. The Duohess of Argyle alone had about 500 souls, for 21 deaths ooonrred on the voyage, all being children, on account of measles breaking out. A few lines further down Mr. Wallace continues :— "These were the first vessels that had oome from England." Suoh is not the faot, for both ships left Greenook (Scotland) direot for Auckland, touching at no ports of oall on the way. In spooking cf immigrants who arrived in the Manukau in 1811, Mr. Wallace falls into a slight error again. The vessel whioh he alludes to was no doubt the three-masted sohooner Manukau, whioh was chartered by a company in Scotland to convey the plant of a sawmill, along with some dozen artizans to assist in the creating of it, to the Manukau. By inserting the above in your next issue, you will greatly oblige. I am, &c, Ddchess of Arotle. Molesworth-street, 81st January, 1889.
