The New Judge.
818. J. E. DENNISTON APPOINTED. LBY TEIiEOKAI'H.] (Our Own Correspondent.) Dunedin, This Day. It is positively known hore that Mr. John E. Denniaton has been appointed as the new Jndgo. He is about 45 years of age, and was formerly olerk in the Bank of New South Wales at Westport. Ho there studied law, and has practised here for nearly twenty years. At present he is a partner in the firm 'of Stewart, Donniston, and Holmes, of which Mr. Downie Stewart is the hoad. It is generally admitted that Mr. Denniston is a well-read mnn and sound lawyer, but of very irritable and hot temper. He is remarkable for the number of scones in whioh he has figured as chief actor in the inferior Courts, in whioh his practice has chiefly lain. His father, Mr. Thomas Denniston, is a Southland settlor, and was for some time editor of the Southland Times. The new Judge is married to a daughter of the late Judge Bathgato. Personally ho is rathor popular, but the appointment is not favourably regarded by either the profession or the public
