♦ I UNITES PREBB ASSOCIATION. | Ddnedin, 18th January. Mr. W. J. M. Larnach having resigned from tho directorate of the Colonial Bank, Mr. J. M. Ritchie has been appointed to the vacancy. At the adjourned meeting of the temperance workers, called to nominate candidates for the licensing elections on the prohibition ticket, some objection was taken to the platform, and one prominent temperance advocate left the meeting, which was a small one. The candidates were not selected. Wanganui, 18th January. The Native Court opened to-day. Mr. E. Ward, E.M., presided. A great many natives are down from the Upper Eiver with the season's wool, which they sold to-day at 7d to 7id per lb. Messrs. Walkor & Hatriok s barquentine St. Kilda sails to-morrow for Sydney direot, with the following cargo: — Nine hundred sacks of oats and wheat, 1770 sacks of ohaff, bran and sharps, 132 bags of pollard, 20 tons of flour and sharps, 10 tons of potatoes, and 10,000 ft of timber. It is hoped this is the beginning of an intercolonial trade from Wanganui direct. Inveecargili,, 18th January. An Oyster and Fishing Company, with a capital of .£75,000 has been formed. Charles Buckingham Lewis, has been committed for trial at the Wanganui Suprome Court on a chargo of rape on a girl eleven years old, at Awahuri, on 27th December. The case lasted two days. Auokland, This Day. A cottage, owned and occupied by Mr. E. Ellis, Wellington-Btreet, was burned yesterday, and three shops belonging to H. Mackay, oacupied respectively by T. Cain, T. Langhan, and J. Home were gutted. Tho insurances are as follow : — Ellis' cottage .£l5O, and furniture £100, in the Liverpool, London, and Globe Office ; Maokay's 3 shops, £400 in the Eoyal; Home' stook, JE2OO in the Colonial. Dunedin, This Day. Sir Kobort Stout left to-day for Wellington, as leading counsel in the libel action Larnach v. the Auckland Herald. Councillor Sinclair is announced as a, candato for the Dunedin Mayoralty.
