Sacred Concert.
An excellent concert of sacred music was given last evening, at St. John's Churoh, by Mr. John M'Glashan's orohestra and the numerous chorus whioh that gentleman has had under his tuition for some weeks past. Eight out of the twelve items on the programme were seleoted from Handel's works, and the choruses from " The Messiah " were rendered with capital effect, which was heightened by the combination of organ and ' orchestral accompaniments. Those worthy of special notice were, "For unto us a Child is Born," and the " Hallelujah Chorus," with whioh the performance concluded, and which was Btmg with a steadiness and accuracy that is not often excelled in Wellington or elsewhere. The other choral triumph of the evening was the "Gloria" from Mozart's Twelfth Mass, in which the orchestra shone to especial advantage ; while "The Heavens are Telling," from Haydn's " Creation," was also a very oreditable piece of coHcerted singing. The performance of the Pastoral Symphony from "The Messiah" by the orchestra was one with which little fault could be found. The doublo quartette, "Hail, Judaea," from "Judas Maccabeus," was sung by Misses Paul, Fletoher (2), Mrs. Palmer, and Messrs. Hudson, Jones, and Billman, the introductory duet being taken by Miss Paul and Miss Fletcher. The flatness of one or two voices rather marred the general effect. The trio "Disdainful of Danger," from the same work was sung by Misses Hudson and Fletcher and Mr. Billman. Mrs. P. P. Webb repeated a well-established success in the solo, "He was Despised," and the air " Return O God of Hosts," from " Samson," was sung very acceptably by Miss Steel. Mr. Prouse has not often sung better than he did in the song, "Star of Bethlehem," for whioh an attempt was made by the audience, forgetful of the sacred character of the building, to secure an encore by applause. Mr. &. J. Pope introduced one of Mr. J. H. Pope's compositions, the solo "I am well Pleased," to .which Mr. M'Glashan played the violin obbligato. Mr. W. H. Hardwiok, organist of St ; Mark's Churoh, presided at the organ, and in addition to playing the accompaniments in a manner calculated to display to the full the splendid resources of the instrument, contributed an offertoire by Guilmant, into which the air of a well-known Christmas hymn is skilfully worked and elaborated by the composer. A collection was taken up in aid of the Organ Fund. Mr. M'Glashan acted as conductor, and handled the baton with judgment.
